Newburyport, MA — As we approach the Independence Day holiday, City Marshal Matthew Simons wants to remind all residents that the private use of fireworks is illegal in Massachusetts. While fireworks may seem like a fun way to celebrate, they pose serious risks to personal safety, property, and public health.
Every year, illegal fireworks cause numerous injuries and fires across the Commonwealth. According to the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services, there have been more than 550 fires and explosions involving illegal fireworks in Massachusetts in the past five years.
The possession, use and sale of fireworks without a professional license is against the law in Massachusetts and punishable by confiscation, fine or imprisonment. Fines range from $100 to $1,000, and some violations could carry a one-year prison sentence. We urge everyone to leave the fireworks to the professionals and attend one of the many sanctioned displays offered in the area. Locally, the following cities/towns have professional displays scheduled:
- 7/2 – Haverhill, Riverside Park – 9:00 PM
- 7/4 – Amesbury, Woodsom Farm – 9:15 PM
- 7/5 – Salisbury, Salisbury Beach – 10:15 PM
“The safety and wellbeing of our residents and visitors remains our highest priority,” said Marshal Simons. “Compliance and cooperation with fireworks laws helps keep our community safe for everyone.”
