The Newburyport Police department has operated a Mountain Bike Patrol since 1998. Weather permitting, we operate the bike patrol 12 months a year. With Newburyport’s historic downtown and waterfront the bikes are ideal for patrolling, offering a highly visible, easily approachable, and highly mobile police officer.
Newburyport has many festivals, events, and fairs throughout the year. Often, the bikes are the best way to patrol and respond to calls for service.
Most officers are currently trained and certified to operate one of these mountain bikes, The training consists of an intensive 3 day course which covers everything from basic riding skills to advanced riding skills, such as riding down stairs and 1 and 2 unit response tactics.
With the opening of the rail trail the bikes also are an ideal way of patrolling what has become a very popular foot and bike path.
