NEWBURYPORT – Mayor Sean Reardon is informing the Newburyport community that Marshal Mark Murray plans to retire from his position with the Newburyport Police Department effective May 10, 2024.
Murray has served as Police Marshal since February 2016 and has led the department admirably during his tenure. Under his leadership, the Department has maintained its accreditation through three cycles and has navigated changes in state and federal policy. Marshal Murray will leave the Department in strong position, and we are grateful for his service. The City plans to honor the Marshal upon his retirement for his over 30 years of service to the City and will release more information closer to his retirement date.
The Marshal’s announcement initiates a process mandated in the City’s Code of Ordinances for choosing a successor. Mayor Reardon will submit to the City Council as list of nine proposed candidates to serve on a hiring committee. That committee will post the position, screen applicants, interview a selected number of candidates, and provide a list of finalists for the Mayor. The Mayor will then interview the finalists and appoint the Marshal, subject to confirmation by the City Council. The process is expected to take no more than six months. The Mayor will appoint an acting Marshal while the process is underway who will serve until the next Marshal takes office.
