HERO’S CUP A GREAT SUCCESS
Newburyport, MA — The Newburyport Police Hockey Team competed in the 3rd annual Hero’s Cup this past weekend. The tournament was comprised of 102 police, fire, military, and first responder teams from around the United States and beyond. The annual tournament was held at the Marlborough Sports Center, in Marlborough, MA, a facility comprised of 8+ full size ice rinks. The tournament is primarily sponsored by the Boston Bruins Foundation with 100% of the monies raised going to charities of each teams choosing. The NPD hockey team was comprised of officers from Newburyport, Salisbury, Amesbury, and West Newbury police departments along with the Massachusetts State Police. We finished the tournament with a 2-1 record beating a St. Louis first responder team and Lowell Fire, while dropping a close third game to a military team from Washington D.C.
It was a great weekend of hockey and camaraderie, but more importantly we raised a bunch of money for a local charity. This is the second year we’ve played in this tournament and we once again played for the 1st Lt. Derek Hines Soldiers Assistance Fund. Thanks to donations from the team and a generous community, we were able to raise close to $5,000 for an organization committed to helping and supporting veterans. Thank you to everyone that supported our fundraising efforts!
