Newburyport Police Department Finalizing Full State Re-Accreditation Process
NEWBURYPORT — City Marshal Mark Murray is pleased to announce that a team of assessors from the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission, Inc. (MPAC) is scheduled to arrive on April 10, 2017 to begin examining various aspects of the Newburyport Police Department’s policies and procedures, operations, and facilities.
Verification by the assessment team that the Newburyport Police Department meets the Commission’s standards is one of the last steps in the voluntary process to gain state re-accreditation.
The Newburyport Police Department has been accredited by MPAC since 2002 and is required to go through a re-assessment every three years to maintain this status.
Accreditation is a self-initiated evaluation process by which police departments strive to meet and maintain standards and best practices that have been established for modern law enforcement agencies.
The accreditation program consists of 253 mandatory standards as well as 122 optional standards. In order to achieve accreditation status, the department must meet all applicable mandatory standards as well as 60 percent of the optional standards.
